Senior standout Aaliyah Clopton continued her tear through the track and field season by winning both the 400-meter dash and 800-meter run in commanding fashion at the E.C. Central girls track sectional on Tuesday night. Clopton ran a 58.72, nearly setting the school record, to win the 400, then returned a couple events later to win the 800 in 2:30.88. Clopton held close to Catheryn Markus of Highland, Hannah Burton of West Side and Lilian Kosier of Highland before blowing past the trio on the backstretch of the final curve. Clopton, then returned to run the third leg of the 1,600-meter relay, in which teammates Aqila Coleman, Breanna Brignac and Kiarra Salhus placed fourth with a time of 4:18.41 and set a PR.
Morton runners capped off their track season by setting a lot of personal records (PRs) for the season and finishing 5th out of 12 teams.
Scoring for the Governors were: Brooklyn Cade with a PR and a 5th place finish in the 100m high hurdles, Tyasia Jones with a PR and 8th place finish in the 300 low hurdles, Nathaly Ponce with a PR and a 5th place finish in the 3200m run.
In the field events, Ce’Etter Stevens placed 4th in the high jump, Aqila Coleman had a PR in the long jump (14-5) and finished 8th, Laurentha Horton (31-3) and Robinae Patton (29-0) both PR’d and placed 4th and 7th respectively in the shot put.
All three relay teams ran their best time of the season ,starting with the 3,200 m relay team of Kiarra Salhus, Nathaly Ponce, Taliyah Callum and Jada Bustos placing 5th. The 400m relay team of Aqila Coleman, Breanna Brignac, Ce’Etter Stevens and Lynnae Collins placed 7th.
The highlight of the night for the Governors remains Clopton with her two sectional championships. She also set a school record in the 400 with that blazing time of 58.72.
Clopton moves on to the Portage Regional next Tuesday.
