With a few injuries keeping our hurdlers out of action and a Concert Choir performance on the same night also eliminating some girls from participating in the Calumet Quad meet, the Governors still stepped up to the challenge and garnered enough points to finish in 2nd place. Scoring for the Governors were: Laurentha Horton – 4th in discus and Brooklyn Cade while still nursing a hamstring, still found a way to help the team score points by placing 5th in the discus. Kiarra Salhus placed 2nd in the long jump and Aqila Coleman placed 3rd. Ce’Etter Stevens placed 2nd in the high jump just missing out on tying the Morton high school record at 5’0, and Kamille Thomas also added points in the high jump by taking 3rd place and 6th in the 200m dash. Aaliyah Clopton continues to drop her time while finishing at the top in her individual events, she placed 1st in both the 1600 and 800 meter runs, while teammates Nathaly Ponce took a 4th in the 1600 and Kamilla Zhambulatova placed 6th in the 800. In the relays: Unfortunately a drop of the baton hurt the Governors of placing in the top 3 but the girls showed their character by quickly picking it up and continuing the fight by running good times in their personal legs of the 400 relay. The 3200 m relay of Nathaly Ponce, Taliyah Callum, Jada Bustos and Kamilla Zhambulatova finished 2nd improving their time from the previous meet by 23 seconds. Great job girls, that’s what it is all about-improvement! And wrapping up the night was the 1600m relay team of Aqila Coleman, Breanna Brignac, Kiarra Salhus and Aaliyah Clopton who finished first and also improved their time by 8 seconds. Outstanding! The girls will be traveling to Wheeler Saturday to participate in their invite. Good luck girls!
